AFRICA EMERGENCY PLANNING AND SERVICES CONFERENCE28-29 June 2018Accra - GhanaThe background
African countries are not new to natural disasters and human activity (accident) disasters. Although these are bound to happen globally, many affected countries in Africa suffer high casualties and deaths because they do not have the available emergency preventatives measures, standard operating procedures in responses and not able to establish sustainable reconstruction efforts.

The 2013 Ebola outbreak in the West of Africa killed more than 11,000 people in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Also, in 2017 mudslides in Sierra Leone killed 1,000 people. The increasing consequences of climate change recorded in Africa in the last 10 years such as heavy rains that destroyed lives and property in Accra Ghana 2016, the devastating flood in South Africa and Botswana which were severely hit led to 500 deaths and over 6000 internally displaced persons. Others include earthquake activities in Mozambique and the DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania where a total of 314 people lost their lives.

Therefore, it has become apparent that emergency planning and service providers in Africa needs to be equipped with skills, knowledge, and tools that would enable them to effectively deal with these various sports of emergencies to limit their human and environmental consequences.
